I hesitate to sell work this way anymore because it's not really what I use dA for but hey people like zombies and I want to keep all transactions between myself and you.
I am also working on a slew of other undead type works. Seriously thinking of setting up an alt. account to hold all of this type of work.
Maybe that would be a good contest - name the account.
Technically yes, it is all repainted but I definitely use photo reference, but not for the elements you might think. It's strange but I hollow out the image almost list a coloring book and once the basic contours and proportional relationships are all locked in, I start layering new elements of invention. But yeah, ultimately there is an amalgam of drawn/painted pixels. It almost feels like sculpting.
Wish I could find a better analogy. But it is about as painstakingly slow working in digital as oil used to be. This particular work took a lot of hour/days. Had to really slow down. I also work on the various elements separately, almost as smaller studies. Figures go the same way. I have sketchbooks filled with just parts.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
