Artist's Comments

This is a departure from the way I usually work. It is technically mixed media, but all digitized, so I am not sure where that lies.
For a themed event, with the topic of "Occult", which as true students of the occult sciences will know, refers to that which is hidden, not something oogety-booogety and circa late 80's Motley Crue video. Not that there is anything wrong with that approach, if it is done well. At this point, I am done with this, even though I know it could go in so very many directions, there is no more time to play. I chose to do this as a poster which explains the text (and I never use text in my work, not really) and to recall turn of the century portrait work with the oval vignetting.

The text says,

"Under the veil of natural magic, it hath pleased the Almighty to conceal many valuable and excellent gifts, which common people either think miraculous, or next to impossible. And yet in truth, natural magic is nothing more than the workmanship of nature, made manifest by art; for, in tillage, as nature produceth corn and herbs, so art, being nature's handmaid, prepareth and helpeth it forward; in which times and seasons are materially to be considered; for annus, non arvus, producit aristas. And, though these things, while they lie hid in nature, do many of them seem impossible and miraculous, yet, when they are known, and the simplicity revealed..." Thanks go out to to the fantastic Sofie and Ebenezer Sibly.

Thanks, it is tricky because sometimes you start to see so many possible paths the work could go... so finding that "stop" point is what is hard.
I think with other media it is more material-defined, e.g. the oil dries, the developer/stop bath is exhaustes, etc.

Digital will let you drive yourself into the ground. What an unwieldy beast it can be, but then the rewards are also massive.

Okay /rant, thanks for checking it out!

I know exactly what you mean. I sometimes think it's not so much that I'm uninspired, but more that my mind/body/nerves are acting in defense of the madness that could follow, lol!

Very lovely portrait.
There's a subtle magical quality about this...more like an aura.

Beautiful, nostalgic piece. Reminds me of those wonderfully over ripe 1890's, when Mucha talked regularly to the spirit of Goethe, and Sarah Bernhardt slept in a casket (Jacko is such a plagiarist).
Love that definition of "occult." My Easter eggs were occult, and I never even realized it.

Ha. An oval portrait. Let the romantic in me believe the model is dead. ;-)
